Meliá Cala Galdana, Menorca: An Honest Review of Our Luxury Family Stay on The Level
Some places you visit. Others you settle into. By day two at Meliá Cala Galdana, we'd stopped counting the days altogether.
We spent seven slow, sun-soaked days at Meliá Cala Galdana in Menorca this summer, and it turned out to be exactly the kind of family holiday I'm always chasing. The sort where the children are happy, the views never get old, and the grown-ups actually get to relax too.
This is my full, honest review of our stay, covering The Level family suite, the food, the pools, the beachfront setting, and the day trips we took to Ciutadella and Ferreries. Where is Meliá Cala Galdana?
Meliá Cala Galdana sits right on the edge of one of Menorca's most beautiful bays, on the south coast of the island and around 40 minutes' drive from the airport. Cala Galdana itself is often called the "Queen of the Calas" because it is a horseshoe of golden sand wrapped around turquoise water and framed by pine-covered cliffs. It's genuinely as beautiful in person as it looks in photos. It feels like you are looking at a film set or postcard. The views are sensational! It's no surprise that the beach has held a Blue Flag award for its clean water and pristine sand.

The hotel is the largest in the resort and overlooks the bay, which means those famous views are front and centre throughout your stay. Despite its size, the location keeps everything feeling relaxed. You've got the beach, a handful of restaurants, a couple of small supermarkets and easy access to some of the island's best coves all within walking distance. It strikes a lovely balance: you're somewhere with proper facilities and a real sense of occasion, but you're also right on the doorstep of nature.
First Impressions
Pulling up to the hotel, the first thing that strikes you is the setting. The building steps down towards the bay, and almost everything is oriented to make the most of that view. As Level guests, we were taken to The Level for check-in, where complimentary refreshments, canapés and small bites were waiting for us. There was also colouring for the children, which was such a thoughtful touch and kept them happily occupied while we took care of the check-in formalities.
Check-in is from 3pm and, as is often the way during the busy summer months, our suite wasn’t quite ready when we arrived early. Rather than it feeling like a frustration, though, we simply headed straight down to the beach. If you’re arriving early, I’d definitely recommend packing your swimming things in your hand luggage so you can make the most of the hotel while you wait. We did exactly that, and before long we were sitting by the sea with a cold drink while the children played, the holiday already feeling well and truly underway.
Our Stay: The Level Family Suite
We stayed in a Level Family Suite, and it set the tone for the whole week from the moment we walked in. When we choose a relaxing family beach holiday, the room and hotel are every bit as important to us as the destination itself. We want somewhere that feels like a retreat - a space where we can properly switch off, feel looked after and enjoy a little luxury even during the quieter moments spent back in the room.
Travelling with young children also means there are inevitably times when you spend more time in your room than you might on a couples trip. Whether it’s heading back for an afternoon nap while we relax, or calling it an early night after a few later evenings, having a suite that we genuinely enjoy spending time in makes such a difference to the overall holiday.
The suite absolutely delivered. It felt spacious, beautifully considered and genuinely relaxing, giving us that sense of being pampered in our own space while still having all the luxury service and atmosphere of the hotel just outside our door. Combined with the beautiful setting, it was exactly the kind of base we look for in a family escape and more than met our expectations.

The suite was beautifully designed, bright, modern and properly thought through for family life, with two connecting rooms giving us the space that makes all the difference when you're travelling with little ones. There was room for everyone to spread out, a comfortable lounge area, and all the small touches that make a room feel designed for a luxurious family stay rather than just functional.
The real showstopper, though, was the view. We had Cala Galdana laid out in front of us, and honestly, some of my favourite moments of the whole trip were simply soaking in the freestanding bath or sitting out on the balcony with that turquoise bay stretching out below us. On the evenings the little ones went to bed early, we could still enjoy listening and watching the live music drifting up from below, either from the balcony or the bath, with the sea and the sunset right there. It's the kind of detail that turns a nice hotel stay into something you remember for years.
Having a suite rather than a single room genuinely transforms a family holiday. Once the children were asleep, we weren't stuck sitting in the dark in silence, or squeezed in a smaller space. Instead, we had a separate space to relax in, enjoy a glass of wine, and actually feel like we'd had an evening. If you're travelling with children and you can stretch to it, the family suite is worth every penny for that reason alone.
What is The Level at Meliá Cala Galdana?
If you're weighing up whether The Level is worth it, here's the honest version. The Level is Meliá's premium service tier providing the best rooms in the hotel, in the best positions, with added comforts and a more personal level of service throughout your stay.
In practical terms, that meant upgraded room amenities (Nespresso machine, Rituals toiletries, proper finishing touches), access to a dedicated Level lounge with drinks and snacks available all afternoon until 8pm, a private reception area for a smoother check-in, and that lovely sense of being properly looked after. There's also exclusive access to the adults-only infinity pool, which I'll come to in a moment. For a family holiday where you want the trip to feel like a treat rather than just a logistics exercise, it made a real difference.

One genuine highlight worth mentioning: Meliá runs free yoga and wellness sessions designed in partnership with mindfulness expert Xuan Lan, which is a beautiful addition if you want a little calm built into your week. Whether you're a dedicated yogi like me or just fancy starting one morning a little more mindfully, it's a lovely touch that fits the relaxed pace of the place.
The Pools
The hotel has three pools, and between them they cover every mood. There's a large main pool with a lifeguard, a pool bar and towel service. There's a dedicated children's pool, shallow and gentle. Then, for Level guests, there's the adults-only infinity pool at the beach club and this is something special. Perched to make the most of the views over Cala Galdana, with an infinity pool, concierge and a quieter, more grown-up atmosphere looking out over the bay that feels genuinely luxurious.

The Food and Restaurants
The food was a real strong point of our stay. The hotel has a good spread of restaurants and bars across the resort, from the main buffet restaurant to Mediterranean dining right by the beach, plus a lovely lobby bar for a relaxed drink at any time of day.
While our suite came with Level benefits, we actually chose to enjoy breakfast in the main restaurant most mornings and we were so glad we did. The choice and variety were fantastic, with show-cooking stations, a dedicated kids' section, and more than enough to keep everyone in the family happy, however fussy or adventurous they were feeling that day. The restaurant roof opens up and there's a terrace with panoramic views over the bay, so breakfast became this lovely unhurried start to the day with the sea right in front of us.

We also loved staying local in the evenings and ate at the beach restaurant a few times. The service and the food were both genuinely top, and there was something special about dining right by the water as the sun went down. On several evenings there was live music afterwards, which became one of the loveliest parts of our daily rhythm whether we stayed down to enjoy it or drifted back up to the suite and listened from the balcony.
If you fancy a night off from eating at the hotel altogether, there are restaurants within walking distance in the resort too, so you're never short of choice.
The Beach and Setting
Cala Galdana beach is the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with Menorca. Soft golden sand, calm shallow water that's brilliant for children, and that incredible turquoise colour that barely looks real. Being able to walk down from the hotel and straight onto one of the prettiest beaches on the island is a huge part of what makes a stay here special.
The bay is sheltered and gentle, which makes it reassuring for families with younger children, and there's enough going on around the edges with its small local cafés, watersports and a few shops to keep things easy without ever feeling overdeveloped. You can hire kayaks and paddle boards right on the beach, and the calm water makes it a brilliant place to give the children their first go at something on the water.
One small practical note: the beach itself is public, so while access is free, you’ll need to pay for sunbeds and umbrellas if you want to use them down on the sand. We’re very much a beach-loving family, and the children absolutely loved spending hours playing in the water and sand. Cala Galdana really is beautiful, and there was something quite special about sitting back each day, watching them play against that incredible backdrop of turquoise water and the surrounding cliffs.
We actually didn’t spend any time at the main hotel pool during our stay. With a beach this beautiful right on the doorstep, we naturally found ourselves choosing the sea instead, particularly as the main pool doesn’t have the same uninterrupted views across the bay. For us, being able to step straight out of the hotel and spend our days on such a gorgeous beach was one of the highlights of staying here.
A Day on the Water: Boat Trip from Cala Galdana
One of the absolute highlights of our trip was chartering a private sailing boat for the day and exploring the coastline around Cala Galdana from the water. Some of Menorca's most beautiful coves can only be reached by boat, and seeing them this way was completely magical.
We spent hours discovering hidden coves, swimming in crystal-clear water, snorkelling among the rocks and taking the paddle board out. Midway through the day we anchored in a secluded bay for aperitifs and tapas, soaking up the views and slowing down together for some precious family time.
Being out on the water always makes me feel so calm and helps me switch off, it's so therapeutic. A day of turquoise water, hidden beaches, sea breeze and sunshine with nowhere to be except right there in the moment.
If you do one "extra" during your stay, I'd make it this. Boat trips and private charters leave directly from Cala Galdana, so it couldn't be easier to arrange and you can choose anything from a group trip to a fully private day out depending on your budget.
Day Trip to Ciutadella
We took a day to explore Ciutadella, Menorca's old capital and easily one of the prettiest towns on the island. It's about a 30-minute drive from Cala Galdana and absolutely worth the trip. The old town is a maze of narrow, pastel-and-ochre streets, grand aristocratic palaces and shaded squares, all centred around the striking 14th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria, built on the site of a former mosque. The best approach is simply to wander, let yourself get a little lost among the historic streets and you'll stumble on hidden courtyards, boutiques and cafés. We loved stopping for a coffee and cake and just watching the world go by.
Don't miss the Plaça des Born, the grand main square, and make your way down to the port, which sits just below the old town. Lined with restaurants and fishing boats, it's a beautiful spot for lunch overlooking the water, try the local caldereta de langosta (lobster stew) if you're feeling indulgent. If you're visiting with children, there's a playground at Plaça de s'Esplanada, and the whole town feels safe, walkable and family-friendly.
Tip: Visit the cathedral earlier in the morning when it's quieter and cooler, and bear in mind that many attractions and museums close on Sundays and Mondays. There's also a lovely agricultural market at Plaça de la Llibertat on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and in summer the old town comes alive in the evenings with a craft market and a real buzz around the harbour. We enjoyed browsing the boutiques where we purchased lovely holiday bracelets and a few gifts for back home.
Day Trip to Ferreries
On another day we visited Ferreries, the prettiest of Menorca's inland towns and the highest village on the island. With its whitewashed houses set against a backdrop of green hills, it's a lovely glimpse of traditional Menorcan life away from the beaches, and it's only around a 15-minute drive from Cala Galdana. I was pleasantly surprised to find a local cafe here which sold iced matcha's, I couldn't believe my luck!
Ferreries is famous for its Saturday morning market in Plaça Espanya (running roughly 9am to 1pm all year), where you can pick up local produce such as the delicious Menorcan cheese, honey, sausages, jams, fresh fruit and handmade crafts. In summer the market is often livened up with traditional folk dancing, which the children loved. The town is also known for its artisan leather and footwear, so it's a great place to pick up a pair of traditional Menorcan avarca sandals.
During summer there's also a Friday night market with live performances, which is a lovely way to spend a warm evening. Ferreries makes a brilliant few hours trip combined with one of the nearby beaches, although we came back to freshen up and enjoy the Cala Galdana bay!
Tip: Many shops in town close for siesta (roughly 1pm–5pm), so plan your visit around the market in the morning or the livelier evenings.
Other Things to Do Nearby
If you've got a full week like we did, it's worth venturing a little further afield on a couple of days. The Camí de Cavalls, the historic coastal path that loops around the entire island, passes near Cala Galdana and gives you access to some of the most beautiful and quieter coves on foot, including the stunning Cala Mitjana, an easy walk from the resort.
Menorca is also a wonderful island for horse riding, with its native black horses a real point of local pride and stables across the island offering rides for different abilities, including some beautiful coastal routes. If you fancy a bigger day out, the island’s other towns, including the capital, Mahón, with its impressive natural harbour, are all within relatively easy driving distance. One of the joys of Menorca is how compact it is, so you can explore as much or as little as you like during your stay.
With our two still being on the younger side, we deliberately kept our itinerary fairly relaxed. We visited the two towns mentioned above and took a private sailing yacht trip, but beyond that, this holiday was very much about slowing down. Long days on the beach in the incrediblly beautiful bay, enjoying our luxurious suite and making the most of the service at the hotel were exactly what we had come to Menorca for. Often the luxury is not feeling as though you need to be anywhere else.
Tips for Your Stay at Meliá Cala Galdana
After a week here, these are the things I'd pass on to anyone planning a stay:
Consider The Level for a couples trip. The extra space, the better room position, the lounge and the adults-only infinity pool genuinely elevate the holiday.
Pack swimming costumes in your hand luggage. Check-in is mid-afternoon, so if you arrive early you can head straight to the pool or beach while you wait for your room.
Book a boat trip. The coves you can only reach by water were a holiday highlight. Charters leave right from Cala Galdana.
Time your beach mornings early. The bay gets busy in peak season, early mornings are blissfully quiet so you can find the perfect sun-lounger spot and the light is gorgeous for photos.
Use the hotel as a base for day trips. Ciutadella and Ferreries are both easy drives and give you a real feel for the island beyond the resort.
Catch the live music. Even if the little ones go to bed early, you can enjoy it from the balcony if staying in a Levels balcony room, one of my favourite memories of the whole week.
Hire a car. It opens up the island's best beaches, towns and markets, and makes the day trips effortless.
Make the most of the kids' clubs. With clubs catering from babies right up to age 12, you can build in a little grown-up time at the infinity pool or beach club guilt-free.
Walk to Cala Mitjana. It's a short, easy walk from the resort and one of the most beautiful coves on the island.
Is It Good for Families?
Absolutely. The combination of a calm, shallow beach right on the doorstep, spacious family suites, three pools including a dedicated children's pool, excellent and varied food, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere makes this a brilliant choice for families. The Level family suite in particular took the stress out of travelling with children, having the extra space and connecting rooms meant everyone had room to breathe.
There's also enough to do beyond the hotel, boat trips, beaches, easy day trips to characterful towns, to fill a full week without anyone getting restless. And crucially, it's the kind of place where parents get to actually rest too, rather than just managing everyone else's holiday.
The Honest Bits
No review is complete without the honest details, so here's my take. This is a large hotel, and in peak season it does get busy. The best sun beds around the pools and at the beach go early, and you'll want to be organised if you have your heart set on a particular spot. Parking and the infinity pool both come at an additional cost, so it's worth factoring those in when you budget.
If you upgrade to the Levels, although you can have breakfast in th eprivate lounge, the options are very limited so you are better off eating in the main buffet restaurant for a huge array of options.
None of this took the shine off our stay in the slightest, but I always think it's helpful to go in with eyes open, so you can plan around the busy spots and make the most of everything on offer.
Final Thoughts: Would We Go Back?
Without hesitation. Our week at Meliá Cala Galdana was everything I want a family holiday to be, beautiful, relaxed, and full of the simple moments that end up meaning the most. The view from our suite, the live music drifting up in the evenings, the day out on the water, the slow mornings over breakfast with the bay in front of us.
It's the kind of stay that makes you start planning the next one before you've even left. I love to try new hotels, but we would choose this holiday again.
