When planning our family escape to Marrakesh, the usual luxury hotel search began. Five-star resorts with marble-clad lobbies, infinity pools, and name recognition dominated the list. Not long into my search, something pulled me in a different direction. Something quieter, more meaningful and more Moroccan. Instead of a polished international hotel chain, we stepped into the beautiful world of a riad and it changed the way I think about luxury travel altogether.

Riad [ree-ahd] noun. Origin: Arabic رياض (riyāḍ) meaning 'gardens'

A traditional Moroccan home or palace with an interior courtyard or garden, often featuring ornate tiles, carved woodwork, and open-air architecture.

Originally designed to offer privacy, tranquility, and protection from the elements, riads are now often restored into boutique guesthouses that embody Moroccan heritage, craftsmanship, and hospitality.

Why We Chose a Riad Over a 5-Star Hotel

Hotels have their time and place, but in a city like Marrakesh, so layered in culture, craftsmanship, and tradition, we craved something deeper.

From the moment we arrived at our riad, it felt like visiting family. Mint tea on arrival, home-cooked tagines made just for us, and the kind of warm care only found in family-run riads. It's the difference between service and soul.

Even the design of every riad tells a story. From the arch and mosaics, to the carved cedar panels, speak of centuries-old craftsmanship. Unlike modern hotels, a riad is art you can sleep in.

Plus, no trip to Morocco is complete without a hammam, a centuries-old cleansing ritual that leaves you glowing, grounded, and completely reset.

The moment you step inside an unassuming wooden door, the noise fades, the bustle disappears, replaced by stillness and the gentle rhythm of calm. During our stay at Riad Mazarin des Gourmets, and typical for a stay at a traditional riad, every meal was cooked fresh on-site with love. No buffet lines, no overpriced menus. It felt like having your own private chef serving real, home-style Moroccan flavour.

From BBQs and fresh salads to their signature vegetable couscous and lamb tagine. When you stay at a riad, you can trust that the dishes are made authentically by a local, and that’s where the magic happens.

Luxury Without the Price Tag

We stayed at Riad Mazarin des Gourmets, a hidden gem passed down through generations. The entire experience from the service and decor to the attention to detail felt 5-star, but the price didn’t. It's intimate, high-end, and far more personal than a corporate hotel, and that made all the difference. Our room had the most luxuriously soft four poster bed and a standalone bath tub nestled in the bay window overlooking the courtyard. We were even chaperoned to our taxis through the winding alleyways. The staff made sure we were cared for at every step. It wasn’t flashy. It was quietly extraordinary.

Top Tip: Choosing a riad that has a Hammam spa, means you can unwind in total privacy, without ever leaving the calm of your stay. A steam, a full-body exfoliation, and the dreamiest massage to finish. It will be the perfect end to a busy day exploring.

Our Favourite Moments... Soaking in a clawfoot tub with the windows open to the courtyard’s birdsong. Sharing slow Moroccan breakfasts on the rooftop. The glow of lanterns lighting up the arches at dusk. The way the stillness settled around us, even in the centre of the city.

Travel Tips For Riad Stays in Morocco

• Airport transfer is a must: Riads are often in pedestrian-only areas, so book a transfer that includes porter service.

• Stay at least 2–3 nights to soak in the experience.

• Pack light and preferably in a comfortable rucksack. This will make it a lot easier (and less embarrassing) to walk to your door through cobbled streets and throught the hustle and bustle.

• Book direct where possible for better rates and inclusions.

• Check for air conditioning (essential in summer months!)

This trip was a powerful reminder that true luxury isn’t always wrapped in five-star labels.

Sometimes, it’s found in quiet courtyards, handwritten welcome notes, and food made with love.

It taught me that “wellthe”—a blend of wellness, wealth, and meaningful experiences—isn’t about extravagance. It’s about how you feel: peaceful, present, inspired. It's about choosing places and experiences that feed your soul, not just your camera roll.

In the stillness of that riad, I felt it all: calm, creativity, connection, and that, to me, is the heart of luxury.
